Fire Rescue

Welcome!

On behalf of the men and women of Portage Fire Rescue, I would like to thank you for visiting our website. It is my sincere hope that this website will provide you with the opportunity to connect with our organization and gain a greater understanding of the services we provide to our community. Please take a few minutes to learn more about our organization’s structure, services, mission, vision and values.

We are a combination fire rescue organization that serves the City of Portage, and the Townships of Caledonia, Lewiston, Pacific, and Fort Winnebago. Our organization services an area of 170 square miles with a population of approximately 16,400 people. The members of Portage Fire Rescue are proud of its rich history and its tradition of excellence. As we move forward, our goal is to continue strengthening our partnership with the community as we provide the highest quality of service and safety to those we serve.

While emergency response is our primary focus, we also understand the importance of prevention and preparedness. We believe that education and outreach are powerful tools to empower individuals and foster a culture of safety. Through our fire safety programs, community partnerships, and proactive initiatives, we strive to equip our community with the knowledge and resources needed to mitigate risks and protect themselves.

On January 1, 2025, Portage Fire Rescue will begin operating a new ambulance service in the City of Portage and our surrounding townships. We have begun the process of building an EMS program that our community can be proud of. We will be licensed at the Paramedic Level, which is the highest level of pre-hospital emergency care in the State of Wisconsin.  We will provide safe, professional, and compassionate care to our community with an emphasis on highly trained, personal care and an empowered EMS staff.

We welcome your feedback and appreciate your continued support. If I can ever be of assistance, please contact me at troy.haase@portagewi.gov or by phone at 608-742-2172.

Respectfully,

Fire Chief Troy Haase

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the batteries in my smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm?

The Fire Department would like to encourage residents to replace the batteries (9 volt and AA) in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms every six months. The Portage Fire Department has batteries available at the fire station. If assistance is needed with installing the batteries in your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, please contact the fire department at (608) 742-2172 and someone will schedule a time to come and assist. The batteries we receive are donated each year by Ray-o-Vac/Energizer.

When is a Burn Permit required?

The City of Portage requires a burn permit for all open burning other than outdoor recreational fire pits or fireplaces.  The permit can be found on the Portage Fire Department Website (Click Here for Burn Permit) or you can stop into the station.

For those of you that live outside of the City and wish to burn, you must contact the DNR at https://dnr.wi.gov/burnpermits or 1-888-947-2876. Due to the Coronavirus there are no in person DNR burn permits being issued.
